Spider Veins is the term for the small purple, red veins that are visible on the surface of the skin. Spider veins very rarely cause any discomfort but they are hard to hide.
What you can do about it:
Numerous treatments for spider veins have been tried over the years including injections (sclerotherapy), lasers and surgical removal. At Cosmetic Skin and Laser Center, we use newer injectables. They are more effective and much less painful than the previous saline injections.
How it’s done:
The injections are done using a very fine “Botox size” needle. Treatments take 10-30 minutes. Minor irritation and itching is common on the day of treatment. As a vein is injected, it disappears for a few seconds. The medication works by irritating the lining of the vessel, causing it to collapse. Your body will get rid of the vein naturally. (Remember---it wasn’t functioning to begin with!)
What to expect:
A vein may need to be injected 3 times for complete resolution. Sometimes they actually look darker for a few weeks after treatment, then they slowly fade away. Depending on the size of the spider vein, compression stockings may be recommended for a few days.
